The landscape of the Indian education system changed drastically since the second half of 20th century. This paper is divided into two sections of 200 marks each; General Studies Paper I and General Studies Paper II. Both the papers will have objective questions, and you will get two hours for each paper. Marks from these papers will not add on to the final scorecard as these acts just as a qualifying examination. The Union Public Service Commission will draft a list of students on the basis of qualifying marks obtained in the General Studies Paper I and minimum 33% marks in the General Studies Paper II. Marks from the General Studies Paper I will be counted for the merit list finalized by the commission.

Syllabus for Paper II; Comprehension, Written and Speaking skills, Logical Reasoning and Analytical Ability, Problem-solving and Decision-making skills, General mental ability, and Date Interpretation Basic Numeracy.
Mains consists of nine papers, and 1750 marks are up for grabs. Of the nine papers, seven will be considered for the merit list whereas, for the rest two, students need to secure the minimum marks prescribed by UPSC every year. It is necessary that the student thoroughly studies the UPSC Exam Pattern in order to crack the difficult paper.
Paper, I of the mains exam, features essay questions on multiple topics and total marks of 250. You need to study the syllabus in depth for the essay questions. Marks are given on the precision and content of the essay. It is advised to stick close to the topic and avoid any diversions.
Paper II (General Studies I) of mains examination will test your knowledge of General Studies from the areas; History and Geography of world, Indian Heritage and culture.
Paper III (General Studies II) of mains examination includes; Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International Relations and carries 250 marks.
Paper IV (General Studies III) of mains examinations covers; Biodiversity, Economic Development, Technology, Environment, and Disaster management. This paper carries 250 marks.
Paper V (General Studies IV) of mains examination covers; Integrity, Ethics and Aptitude and carries 250 marks. This paper tests the logical and problem-solving abilities of the candidates. His/her attitude towards public issues and approach towards conflicts faced in real life will be tested.

Paper VIII and IX are qualifying papers of 300 marks each. Paper VIII deals with the Indian language. Students hailing from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Nagaland, Manipur and Meghalaya, have the option of not giving this paper. Paper IX will test your English skills.
