Civil Services Examination or CSE is the most prestigious and reputed exam in India. The exam is conducted every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). All the posts of Indian Administrative Services, Indian Police Services, and Indian Financial Services are recruited through this entrance exam. The exam is conducted each year, to recruit the best candidates for top government posts. More than 5 lakh candidates appear for the exam each year, while the success rate is only 0.1%. It is evident here that UPSC is the most difficult exam in our country.

The entrance exam of UPSC is conducted in two parts or phases, namely prelims and mains. The prelims consist of two objective type papers of 400 marks. It is a qualifying round, implying that the total of IAS score does not contain these marks. The mains consists of two types of papers, qualifying papers and the ones that account for merit formation. The first part has two language exams, out of which one is English, and the candidate can choose the other. The second one has seven papers, with 300 questions each. Lastly, the candidate goes through an interview or personality test, which is of 275 marks. The sum total of all the seven exams and the personal interview is used to calculate the ranking. Given the complexity of the exam’s pattern and sheer competition, one needs determination, focus, and the right guidance as well. While the first two are intrinsic, you can surely get the right guidance by a teacher or professional. A coaching institute can provide you with it.

To appear for this exam, the candidate must fulfill the basic Eligibility Criteria. They are:

  • A candidate sitting for the UPSC exam must hold a degree from a deemed university under the UGC or incorporated under the Act of Parliament.
  • The candidate must be over the age of 21 years but under 32 years.
  • For the post of IAS and IPS, a candidate must be an Indian citizen. Whereas, apart from these, the candidate can be a citizen of India, Nepal, Bhutan, a refugee of Tibet, or Indian origin immigrant.
  • The candidate has to go through a medical examination. They must be physically and mentally fit to do justice to the position.
